For Asian women, hair loss tends to manifest in a diffuse way initially Tellogen Effluvium , starting with thinning hair all over. This may then progress to balding areas on the crown of the head. Hair loss is a distressing development in the life of a person, perhaps more so for women where social stigma highlights the importance of appearance and of hair and dress styling.

Unlike men, who tend to go bald in patches on the temples and the crown, women are more likely to suffer from uniformly diffuse thinning around the entire scalp. As its name would suggest, androgenetic alopecia is primarily due to the presence of male androgen hormones, like testosterone. Or so it was thought.

There are several descriptions regarding the characteristics of AGA in patients of European descent. Asian patients with AGA have different types of hair loss and family histories from Europeans, which may affect treatment response. Therefore, in this review, prevalence, hair loss patterns, familial factors, androgen receptor gene polymorphisms of Asian AGA patients, and management based on algorithmic guidelines for AGA are discussed. This review may be useful for dermatologists in clinical practice for diagnosing and designing management approaches for Asian patients with AGA.
