Vaginal douching is widely practiced by women in the USA, particularly among minority ethnic groups, and is associated with increased risk of pelvic and vaginal infections. Douching practices are shaped by social and cultural norms regarding female hygiene, reproduction, and sexuality. Little previous research has addressed the beliefs and practices of Latina women, and none has included the perspective of men, though limited data suggests that women may douche to please male partners. The present study seeks to identify the socially and culturally shaped beliefs and attitudes that influence douching practices from the perspective of Latino men. Results indicate that these Latino men mostly of Caribbean descent are emphatic about the role of cleanliness in vaginal health, reporting that it substantially influences their choice of partner.

This teen mom and her newborn rode a city bus to a school for delinquents. At 14, she was told to hide her baby bump and switch schools. And they delivered. When Viririana Covarrubias announced she was pregnant at 15, a family meeting was held. But she was merely a bystander. Covarrubias and her boyfriend — then both students at Fresno High School — watched as their parents discussed that the two should get married and raise the baby together. Her father and uncles started making plans to convert the garage into a small living space for the soon-to-be family of three.

I have something to admit. From the first time I set my sights on meeting women of any kind, I loved Latinas; they are my favorites. Not long ago, while out and about, I walked into a bakery not far from where I live, wishing to satisfy a sweet tooth. The girl walked out from the back of the store with a bounce in her step, the smile of a goddess on her lips, and a glint of fire in her eyes. I had to have her.

The 47 Hispanic women interviewed revealed similarities with regard to family and relationships, cultural concerns, work-related issues, and personal development.
