Both health care professionals and the medical research establishment have historically ignored the so-called sexual minorities, including lesbians. Much of what was known was derived from anecdotal experience and volunteer surveys. As a basic principle, most health concerns of lesbians are no different from those of heterosexual women. However, there are unique factors in four areas.

Sexual health is an essential and often neglected component of primary care. Nurse practitioners are ideal members of the healthcare team to be providing sexual health information, diagnoses, and treatments. Unfortunately, this is an area that has been lacking in the education of all healthcare providers. This paper describes a program that incorporates sexual health into the curriculum for nurse practitioner students through collaboration between the university school of nursing and the local health department. Given the increasing shortage of clinical sites and the need to train nurse practitioners to be competent in the delivery of sexual health, this is a model that could benefit other schools of nursing. People who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender LGBT are members of every community. They are diverse, come from all walks of life, and include people of all races and ethnicities, all ages, all socioeconomic statuses, and from all parts of the country. The perspectives and needs of LGBT people should be routinely considered in public health efforts to improve the overall health of every person and eliminate health disparities.
